Special combination release with commentary from BosstTalk 101 and Black THeRapii Dr. Ranessa Harding
📍Los Angeles, CA — The internet is in a frenzy after a viral post by @boosieig2024 sparked one of the greatest R&B debates of all time. The image—a Mount Rushmore-inspired tribute—features legendary artists Michael Jackson, Ne-Yo, Usher, and Chris Brown. But one name’s absence is setting timelines on fire: R. Kelly.
Boss Talk 101 isn’t backing down from the conversation. Boss Talk very own Dr. Ranessa Harding, a recurring voice of reason on the platform, she laid out her perspective:
“Let’s be real. If this was a total package it will be James Brown, MJ, Usher, CB—these men didn’t just sing. They performed. They sang, danced, wrote music, and commanded the stage. That’s what makes a list special—it’s not just about the voice, it’s about the full package. And that’s where R. Kelly stands apart: he doesn’t dance.”
Still, Dr. Harding didn’t discount R. Kelly’s contribution to the genre. In fact, she emphasized his legendary status in a different lane:
“R. Kelly and Ne-Yo are both master craftsmen. They’ve created hits not just for themselves, but for a generation. R. Kelly’s vocal range, cinematic musical style, and songwriting for others is undeniable. That man’s pen and voice helped shape the sound of modern R&B.”
Dr. Harding also called for more clarity and criteria when it comes to assembling these cultural Mount Rushmores:
“When people put these kinds of visuals together, they need to base it on qualifications. What are we measuring—impact, versatility, stage presence, musical catalog, songwriting? Because if it’s overall talent, then absolutely, R. Kelly belongs up there.”
🔴 Bosi Den Bottom Line:
Talent can’t be denied, but the criteria matter. Some men are icons in performance. Others are legends behind the music. Either way, the debate is far from over.
